I’ve been hard at work sewing pillows for our living room (I’ve always wanted to replace the ones that match the sofa) and I thought some of you might like a little tutorial on how to make a simple envelope-back style pillow (aka no zippers required!).
You should know that before starting on the first of these pillows, I hadn’t touched a sewing machine since home economics in high school. My mom lent (and now gave) ...

Last weekend I tackled a little project. My desk chair has been this vintage (maybe antique?) chair that I took from my parents’ house when I moved into my first off-campus apartment in college. It was pretty beat up, but I kind of liked that about it.
Then my parents were visiting a few weeks ago and my dad asked “With all the furniture painting and refinishing you’ve been doing, why the hell does that chair ...

Fall is by far my favorite season, and even though I love the spooky decorations of Halloween, I like to start off with a simple fall scheme, add my spook for Halloween weekend, then take it out and leave the other decor up for Thanksgiving. Here we have phase one (with just a touch of phase two). Pumpkins lining our stairs, an olive branch wreath ($3 at the craft store!) and a haybale with more ...

When we first moved into our house in October 2009, we were combining two households of furniture. My dining table and chairs made it into the dining area, while Ryan’s round table and chairs lived in the kitchen (we also ate most of our meals in the kitchen too). Since our big project of the summer was refinishing the old kitchen table (and selling my smaller set on Craigslist), we lost prep space and storage ...

I’m loving these white sheers trimmed out in a dark shade (I think it’s navy). While these curtains are likely custom ordered, why not hack this idea for yourself? If you’re handy with a sewing machine, you’ll know what to do. Non-sewers could use wide ribbon or edges-tucked-under fabrics strips and iron-on tape (used for hemming) or fabric glue. Ikea sheers are cheap, ribbon can be found cheap. Eye-catching and interesting window treatments are just ...

We have been super busy in our dining room and only one major project stands between us and the AFTER pictures. Planned to have it done on Sunday, but Ryan and I found our DIY limitations, so we’re moving on to Plan B (and Plan C, if we have to!).
In the meanwhile, we’ve tackled the icky chair problem. The result:
After looking for hours on Craigslist and seeing only frumpy vintage chairs that would need repainting ...

Our Dining Room Rehab is still kickin, and today I wanted to share a REALLY simple project that anyone could do at home with a free afternoon and no spare cash. I worked on it one evening when Ryan was out with the boys and it was a lot of fun. Gotta love big impact for minimal cost, right?
The corner of our dining room that has our two leaning bookshelves has pretty much been the ...

Look what was waiting on our porch when we got home last night!
Any guesses what it is for? I’ve been waiting anxiously for it to arrive for two weeks! And I LOVE it in person. Yay! Can’t wait to show you what I have planned!
P.S. This is just a portion of the yardage, not the whole thing.

Another post from the front-line of Dining Room Rehab! We added some storage that happens to also be decorative. Fancy that.
So my fantasy was to walk into a hole-in-the-wall thrift store and find an AMAZING china hutch/secretary/pie cupboard thing and snap it up for $30, paint it a snazzy color or line the back with wallpaper and then wow you with my skills. Well, I did some scouring, and I did some craigslist stalking, and ...

I knew you guys would want some instructions on how to make your own pretty bulletin board after I posted mine – it was SO easy and pretty inexpensive. And I love that it dresses up my wall while letting me swap out inspiration pictures, cards from Ryan, and other pretties.
Here’s how to get one all of your own:
Start with a plan old cork board with a frame. Mine was from Target in the back ...
