I haven’t made any official resolutions yet, but one might be to stay on top of housework better. Particularly dealing with clutter (or potential clutter) in an efficient manner. Since the housewarming, our little home office has been the dumping ground for papers, holiday craft remnants, returns, gifts, books, and more. Plus, nothing has been put away properly.
Exhibit A: The sofa.
What is particularly sad about the shelving/couch area is that I have boxes for things (labeled, even) but I just haven’t been using them. Can’t say as much for the desk, which is the clutter magnet for anything that doesn’t have a spot.
Exhibit B: My desk.
The plan:
1. Sort and toss/recycle/put away clutter.
2. Analyze what doesn’t have a “home” and figure out solution
3. We have two printers (not shown), one of which is taking up a ton of space on Ryan’s desk. Need a plan to get these both onto a table/shelf and would love additional storage space (preferably hidden storage)
4. I know that I’m a paper person. I need forms, letters, reminders, bills, etc accessible and not in a file box somewhere or I’ll forget about it. But on my desktop is NOT the place for them.
5. Electronic stuff needs somewhere to be.
6. Empty that box next to desk (it’s framed art from my old apartment that never got hung here) and recycle it.
Do you have an office or office nook in your home? What are ways you have organized or decluttered? I need inspiration! Once I get everything in place, new photos!

It’s so hard to avoid clutter in an apartment. Maybe I should just get rid of stuff. At least you have a cute globe collection and I totally have that blue paper.
Melanie,
I know, I feel like I am constantly getting rid of stuff but it doesn’t seem to help (it DOES but you know what I mean). Yep, I’m obsessed with globes. And I just finished a fun project with that paper that will be up in a post next week! xoxo
Shelves, hang shelves on the wall to help declutter, that’s what I do in my office. I also bought a desk that had deep bookcase cubbies on one side to hide my hard drive and printer. Works like a charm!
I need to conquer my pile habit: I clean my desk area by making little piles. So not working for me!
Love your sofa… Where’d you snag it?
Erin,
I’m a pile maker too! Maybe stacking trays would work for you?
The sofa is from Pier One. I got it a couple years ago because it’s a little smaller than a typical sofa and I didn’t have a ton of space in my apartment. It actually has a fold-out bed (full-size) that is pretty comfy. Only complaint is that the arms aren’t stuffed very well.
No matter how many times I clean and organize my office, as soon as I try to do some kind of project or bring home the mail the whole room looks like a bomb went off! I’ve found that having ‘staging areas’ work for me…places to put things before I can file them away (bills, paperwork, etc.). I also run out of shelf space quickly, so I always just have to make sure everything I need is within reach, where I need it so that I don’t forget about it…everything else (the less used things) are stored away somewhere else. The saying really is true – “A place for everything and everything in it’s place!”
