us

This is a photo of Ryan and I last December when we had weeks of crazy weather (well, crazy for Seattle).  We took some fun walks in the snow and some nail-biting bus rides between our apartments. And holed up for several days at a time with hot cocoa and the Xbox.

Today is Ryan’s official last day at his job. We found out just before Thanksgiving that the company he’d been contracted with for two years decided to let him go.  Kind of a blow since we’d just spent a lot on the move and all, and you  know, pesky Christmas coming up.

We’ve been planning how we’ll cut back, put ourselves on a pretty strict spending freeze, and buckled down. Then earlier this week I found out my hours at work are being reduced from 40 to 32. Now it’s really time to batten down the hatches.

I’m not trying to throw a pity party here. But I wanted to share with you, my readers who visit day after day, what’s going on in my life. I’ve been sort of distracted from the blog and reading YOUR blogs in the last few weeks just trying to get my head wrapped around our situation and figure out our plan. So sorry about that.

In the meanwhile, you can expect to see more posts about living frugally and decorating and dressing stylishly on a budget. Accessible style is always something I’ve tried to focus on, so I hope you enjoy it.

As always, thank you for reading and your support! Have a great weekend. xoxo

What a great photo! Just remember that day and how happy you where… things will look up and you’ll get there again. I was laid off too, from my day job, and it’s hard. It’s very stressful, but you’ll make it and something better will come of it. We have really cut down and I’m doing all handmade gifts this year. Don’t feel like you have to spend on those you love this year, they understand. :) Best to you and your man!

Oh, I can so feel for you, sister. It’s tough. It really is, but it can also be a time for you and Ryan (my guy is a Ryan too :-) to grow together, especially given your new living situations. Hang in there. Be there for each other. And enjoy the simplicity. You can go back through my “spending hiatus” posts and see where we were. It got tight, but with a plan it made it manageable for longer. I hope your “batten down the hatches” is short-lived!!

Oh man, I know what that’s like. I’ve been laid off twice in the past year and a half and it is really frustrating. But it has really given me perspective on what’s REALLY important in life. After living very comfortably for the few years before I was laid off, I’ve had to completely change my outlook and lifestyle and I’m actually much happier living more simply. Sure, there are times when I wish I could really splurge on some serious retail therapy, but those times have become fewer and far between. I wish you guys luck! I know you’ll get through it. It has actually made my relationship with my boyfriend even stronger.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. Its nice to know that so many of you are in the same position (or have been recently). It’s a tough time for everyone and I’m happy to know there are some good resources out there (you!) when I’m looking for information.

      Have a great weekend. Maggie

I’m so sorry to hear this. I’m sure you get this all the time, and you might want to punch people in the face when they say it, but – things will work out. They just will. There will be times when it’s so discouraging and not so fun, but it will be okay. Praying for you both.
