You guys sure do love your built-in bookshelves! Now a question about filling them:
I’m a big reader (I think most of us who drool over bookshelves are). I’m looking for some new stuff to read. Lately if I’m at the bookstore I just end up wandering aimlessly and end up buying a calender or a magazine or something. Way too overwhelmed by all the choices and can’t seem to remember what I’ve heard of recently. I’ve been reading a LOT of non fiction lately, but am open to novels too.
I’m looking for a novel or travel memoir that lies somewhere between Under the Tuscan Sun, Eat, Pray, Love, and The Poisonwood Bible. Any other recommendations will also be taken!
Thanks a lot! I’ll let you know which one I choose to read first and maybe we can all read it. Sort of a casual magchunk book club….
xoxo Maggie

Have you read Revolutionary Road?
I’m not sure if thats the kind of book you’re looking for, but its amazing….It’s so well written it just blows my mind!
Considering english is not my mother language thats pretty awesome. I read a lot in english but normally that only happens when I read in Portuguese.
Have you read the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?? Our book club LOVED it and it is set in Sweden.
I’m a travel memoir addict… have you read “Without Reservations” by Alice Steinbach or “An Italian Affair” by Laura Fraser? Those are 2 books I really liked. I could go on and on, but I will stop there!!
The Best of Friends by Sara James and Ginger Mauney. It’s a true memior of these two women’s friendship, careers, and relationships. It wasn’t necessarily a page turner, but it was so interesting to follow these two ambitious women. I really enjoyed it.
I started logging my books on Goodreads.com You can look at what others are reading and add friends so you can see their lists and ratings. Look for me over there if you want… I’m PS~Erin on there as well.
I have a collection of bound stories from Reader’s Digest from the 6o’s in my bookshelf. You can find pretty books at thrift stores and antique malls. I’m loving it when books are arranged by color.
Have you read the Nicholas Sparks book called Three Weeks with my Brother? They travel around the world together and it talks a bit about their family life, etc. It’s the only book that falls under the “travel” category that I’ve ever read and really liked.
Oooo! A book club is a great idea! I’m onboard with that idea! I’ve been starting and putting down different books a lot lately. I could really use a good read.

haha i was planning an exact same post suggesting book reads.
as for travel reads – books by bill bryson are pretty popular as he’s a well-known travel writer. i’ve read notes from a big country and that was pretty funny. he has a few others that i want to read as well.
Mag—I LOVED that picture you directed me to!! How cute!
Thanks!
“The Men in My Country” by Marilyn Abildskov. Awesome travel memoir written by my all-time favorite writing instructor from college. Love this book.
Have you read the Red Tent? It is sooo great. The story of Dinah, daughter of Leah and Jacob in the Old Testament. It is fiction but a great story of women.
I just finished The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Woa and it was fantastic. Also, if you like modern versions of Shakespeare, try The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. Also wonderful. And have you read The Book Thief? A must. But, my all time favorite: The History of Love. You must read this book immediately if you haven’t already.
Look at you girls go! So many great ideas. I’m checking into these asap. And of course I haven’t read any of these except The History of Love. As Bridget says, you MUST read this. It’s absolutely beautiful. By Nicole Krauss. She also wrote a moving novel called “Man Walked Into a Room” which is how I first discovered her. I flagged almost every page of that book!
Thanks everyone! xoxo
Enchantress of Florance by Salmon Rushdie. Sumptuous decors, edgy plot, issues of fate, family, and destiny, but surprisingly lighthearted. You would love it!
Try Tales of a Female Nomad…it’s very Eat, Pray, Love-esque.
